SUBJECT: “Pacifica Quarry DEIR comments”

Dear Mayor and councilmembers,

The Pacifica Quarry housing project was voted down by our citizens in 2016 with Measure W - a whopping 69-31 referendum. I want you to honor this vote. I do not want this housing development at our Quarry.

Please do not destroy the beautiful quarry, destroy our highly sensitive environment and wildlife and plants as well all the mountains and natural walkways. This area is a beautiful coastal zone with significant erosion issues and wetlands that need to be protected, and the habitat of the California red-legged frog and the San Francisco garter snake. This area is also an area of Native American history and should be protected from any housing development projects.

Documents created by National Park Service and Caltrans have revealed the Rockaway Quarry may indeed be the site of a historical Native American village and settlement. Caltrans is aware of the evolving Native American history of Pacifica and has determined to remove the highwayside statue of Gaspar De Portola at the Pacifica Community Center within the next ninety days.

In addition to the myriad of other inconsistencies on this Draft Environmental Impact Review (DEIR) it is now obvious the Holman and Associates Archaeological Consultants assessment of known cultural resources performed in 2002 is not currently accurate nor adequate and the City of Pacifica must reject this reclamation plan, require a new Cultural and Tribal Resources assessment, and start the whole public comment period anew.

I am against any kind of development in the quarry and elsewhere. Pacifica does not have the infrastructure to support such developments. The traffic is horrendous during commute times and on weekends. On many occasions I have witnessed ambulances, with lights and sirens blaring, unable to navigate the traffic because there’s nowhere for cars to go, especially on the highway 1 south-to-north stretch between Fassler and Reina Del Mar.

There’s also the factor of an antiquated sewer system which I’m sure can’t support the type of development Pacifica is proposing. Taxes, on residents who have been living here for years, will be raised to pay for new infrastructure just so more people can live here.

News out this week is that drought-stricken California will be imposing new rounds of water cuts. The news for water is looking very grim for years going forward. You cannot strap the current residents with even more water reductions because you have agreed to new housing.

I will be paying attention to who supports and does not support development and my vote will speak for itself. I will encourage everyone I know and talk to do the same.

Thank you for not developing this area.

Sincerely,

Dear President and Supervisors,
I am asking for your urgent action with the Pacifica Rockaway Quarry housing project that was voted down by Pacifica’s citizens in 2016 with Measure W - a whopping 69-31 referendum. We do not want housing development at our Quarry.

We ask you to take action just like the Santa Clara County Supervisors have proposed with the Cement Plant and Quarry at Cupertino. Santa Clara County’s potential purchase of the Lehigh cement plant and quarry south of Los Altos could mean conversion of the land to open space.

We seek your help to not destroy the beautiful quarry, destroy our highly sensitive environment and wildlife and plants as well all the mountains and natural walkways. This area is a beautiful coastal zone with significant erosion issues and wetlands that need to be protected, and the habitat of the California red-legged frog and the San Francisco garter snake.
